Isotope ratio analysis is used to measure the relative abundance of naturally occurring isotopes in samples.  It has a wide range of applications.  At Analytica we make use of isotope ratio analysis to test honey for sugar adulteration, in line with international standard methods.

Liquid Chromatography

Liquid chromatography is a widely used technique for separation of non-volatile molecules in a sample.  Paired with a suitable detector, this allows for identification and quantification of target (or unknown) compounds.  At Analytica we make a lot of use of liquid chromatography for testing samples for both functional components as well as residues.

A triple quadrupole mass spectrometer, the AB Sciex 6500 is among the most sensitive instrument or its kind available on the market today.  Analytica have 3 of these instruments – 2 Qtrap MS and 1 MS/MS – which are used in conjunction with UHPLC for routine analysis of samples for residues and other targeted low level components.

ICP-MS

ICP-MS is used for low level measurement of elements in samples – minerals, trace elements, and heavy metals being of most common interest.  Samples are atomised in a very hot plasma flame, and detected/quantified in an associated mass spectrometer.

PerkinElmer nexION 300D ICP-MS

A modern ICP-MS, validated for over 40 elements in a range of sample types - water, organic, and inorganic.  Also has potential for rare earth elemental analysis for authenticity testing, and nanoparticle analysis.
