Test with the market leaders

Honey Testing

Analytica’s honey testing service provides fast and cost effective options for the high volume tests needed by beekeepers, manufacturers, and marketers. We are fully accredited under IANZ 17025 and are MPI RLP approved for stress free exporting of your honey when you use our lab.

As the market leader in NZ honey testing, with excellent support available during and after testing, Analytica can help you with all your honey testing needs. Analytica’s honey testing service provides fast and cost effective options for the high volume tests needed by beekeepers, manufacturers, and marketers. This includes testing required by MPI for Manuka honey.

For those working with mānuka honey, we offer both the chemical marker and DNA based pollen tests proposed by MPI for mānuka honey. Analytica also offers other important tests used for grading such as ‘3-in-1’ (DHA, MG, and HMF), Leptosperin, Pollen Counting and Colour & Conductivity.  And our mānuka forecasting service can help you work out how your mānuka honey will change as it is stored.

General honey tests like Tutin and C4 sugars apply to all honey, and help meet regulatory requirements in NZ and overseas. Similarly, tests such as Glyphosate, Amitraz and Diastase are required by some international markets under the Codex Standard for Honey. Our American Foulbrood (AFB) test allows screening of honey to monitor hive health or ascertain whether a honey product will meet export requirements such as in markets like China.

Microbiology testing is arranged for you by Analytica through our sister laboratories, Food Lab Pacific (FLP) and CAIQTEST (Pacific). Standard testing methodologies suitable to meet international standards such as CODEX are available as well as Chinese National (GB) methods required to meet export requirements for China.

Analytica is actively involved in research, and development of new honey tests, so stay in touch to learn about these.

Manuka 3-in-1 and Forecast

The mānuka honey 3-in-1 test is for anyone interested in mānuka honey – including beekeepers, buyers and sellers of bulk honey, and honey processors producing and labelling final product for sale.

MPI 5 Attributes - Chemical and DNA Markers

The MPI definition consists of five attributes which include four chemical markers (MPI Mānuka Chemical Markers) and a DNA marker from mānuka pollen (MPI Mānuka DNA Marker).

Leptosperin

Leptosperin is the first of what could be a number of Manuka specific chemical markers, which are used to identify Manuka honey for authenticity and labelling purposes.

Pollen Count

Our pollen count test provides a count of the number of pollen grains per 10 grams of honey, and identifies the pollen grains that are most common in the honey sample.

Tutin

After a number of people were hospitalised after eating honey containing Tutin, the Ministry for Primary Industries brought in food safety regulations requiring honey to be tested for Tutin.

Glyphosate

Glyphosate is a herbicide that can end up in honey when sprayed in areas where bees are foraging (e.g. pasture that is being desiccated during wilting) or near hives.

C4 Sugars

This test is used internationally to detect whether honey has been adulterated by adding sugar (mainly cane sugar and high fructose corn syrup).

Diastase

Diastase is an enzyme that is found naturally in honey and degrades over time, especially when exposed to heat. Like HMF, diastase can be used to indicate the age and exposure of honey to heat.

Physical Properties

This is a suite of 4 accredited tests which measure Colour, Conductivity, Moisture and Brix (sugar content) in honey. Among other things, these tests are useful for characterising honeys from different origins honeydew, and other floral sources.

American Foulbrood (AFB)

Analytica offers a test for American Foul Brood disease (AFB) using a modern DNA testing technique called PCR.

Amitraz

Amitraz is the active ingredient in Apivar and Apitraz strips that are used in hives to kill Varroa mites. When bees come into contact with the strips, amitraz is released from the strips and transported by the bees around the hive, killing Varroa.

Trace Elements & Heavy Metals

Most commonly lead (Pb) and Zinc (Zn) are requested, but our testing technology makes it possible for a larger suite of common heavy metals to be tested for only a small increase in total cost.

Microbiology and Extended Chemistry

Microbiology and Extended Chemistry testing is arranged for you by Analytica through its partnership with CAIQTEST (Pacific) and Food Lab Pacific (FLP), who are conveniently located onsite here with us.

Nectar Testing

Analytica’s nectar test measures DHA and the main sugars (fructose and glucose) in nectar samples. Customers receive a report with concentrations of DHA and sugar in their sample.

Royal Jelly & Bee Venom

Bee venom and royal jelly are valuable products produced from hives, and used as ingredients in cosmetics and health products.

ApiNZ Member Offer

Analytica is happy to make some special testing offers available to members of Apiculture New Zealand (ApiNZ). These special offers are based on member feedback about testing information that is important to them.
